Local Learning Curve

Posted in Uncategorized at 11:52 am by altersage

On Wednesday I attended an Internet Marketing and PR Seminar at the Winchester Mansions Hotel in Sea Point presented by Sally Falkow (Expansion Plus) and Leon Lategan (Purple Cow).

It had a relatively good turn-out for an event that was not that widely publicized ironically enough. There were about 40 people, mostly representing PR agencies. There were one or two representatives from the web development sector; MSN.co.za and even Ogilvy – all the way from their Durban office (no Ogilvy Cape Town attendees ;) )!

Sally covered:

  • An overview of the shifts in media consumption
  • Consumer Generated Media
  • Making Your Website A Marketing and PR Tool
  • Examples of before-and-after sites

Leon covered:

  • SEO and SEM with the focus on the growth of the search engines and the importance of search as a branding and marketing tool

It was a good day albeit long (from 08.30 till 18.30), but the folks of the Winchester took really good care of us and fed us very well with sufficient breaks between sessions.

Having spoken with these attendees it became very clear how much we SEMs take for granted as regards our technologies. Some people that attended had no idea of the great power that SEM wields on the web, needless to say RSS, Blogs or even Online Reputation Management.

I definitely am keen to attend and even more so to participate in further such events locally. After all, the more events we host the more informed agencies become which in turn results in more work for Online Marketing Strategists like me.

On a Personal Note:

I bet you’ve been wondering where my new revamped site and service offerings are? I should be finalizing the designs and content over the next two weeks and then hopefully have the final site live by the end of June. Until that time, should you require any advice or would like to find out more about my offerings, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Google Spreadsheets

Viva la revolution! So to speak.

Google are set to launch their Google Spreadsheets service today which will be made available on a limited test basis. A web-based program set to compete with the likes of the desktop based Microsoft Excel. Having acquired the web-based word processor - Writely back in March, it’s definitely been a quick integration.

Google Spreadsheets will support the import and export of documents in the .xls format used in Excel as well as the .csv (comma-separated values) format. The service will provide automatic saving (pretty much like Gmail,) as well as easy transfer of data from cell to cell, inserting and deleting of rows and columns and supports multiple sheets or tabs, said Jonathan Rochelle, product manager for Google Spreadsheet.

Take a look some Google Spreadsheets sneak peeks here.

Beauty, Culture and Predictions

I just had to post today - it being the 6th of the 6th of ‘06 (6/6/06)..and also the launch date for the remake of The Omen movie…The original actor that played Damien is said to have a cameo in the remake as well.

On a much lighter note, and a subject closer to my heart (other than online marketing that is) ;) Joey and I went to watch Memoirs of a Geisha last night.  I had never read the book prior to watching the movie, but was completely intrigued when I saw the trailers. I have always been a fan of the traditional Japanese culture and am now making a concerted effort to read the book. What a beautiful story. A highly recommended movie IMO.
