We had an all round “geek weekend” last weekend with the first *Camp Cape Town held over Saturday and Sunday and very professionally driven by Neil Blakey-Milner flowing into Monday madness at the Cape Town Joomla! Day.

Some of the usual suspects of GeekDinner and 27 Dinner’s were present in the audience as well as on the speaker side, we had a great portrayal of various topics, from User Group Usability Testing to Drupal to raising Venture Capital and even Electronic Ballot Security – US viewpoint. Ian Gilfillan did quiet a great round up on the speakers, and then go here to follow all StarCamp feedback.

Monday followed the second CapeTown Joomla! Day.

There were 4 speakers in total,

  1. StephenTredrea, Comduit, on Collaboration in the community
  2. Alex Kempkins, core team developer directly from Germany via skype linkup on Introduction to JoomFish
  3. Charl van Niekerk, Google Summer of Code & Joomla Developer, Exploring Joomla 1.5 & Templating
  4. Matthew Philogene leading an open discussion (where the Drupal vs Joomla! question inevitably popped up…)

Thank you to Matthew for organising the day, we know how much time and effort goes into planning to hold an event such as this successfully. If you’re passionate about Joomla! and potentially want to assist with organising the event, or even speaking at the next one, contact Matthew directly.

We’re hoping that Matthew will be putting up the presentations & photos of the event on the Joomladay site soon, but inevitably this time of year, its madness all round :)

AlterSage sponsored the tshirts for Joomla! Day. Enabled by LavaInk, who came to the party and speedily delivered within 2 days of brief. Joey and I spent some time with Charl van Niekerk after the conference and somewhere mid convo came about how “Geek” is “Elite” and we came up with some really cool ideas around this concept for t-shirt printing….perhaps for the next event! ;)
